Once a quiet port town, the city of Seattle has grown rapidly in the last several decades, becoming the home to international companies, well-known universities, and renowned medical facilities while also becoming a bustling hub for art, music and cultural events. Seattle, the largest city in Washington State, is known for its urban but casual feel, catering to a vast range of liberal philosophies, international citizenry and environmentalism. This breathtaking city is known for the incredible beauty of its spectacular surroundings – Elliott Bay, Union Bay, Puget Sound, Lake Washington, Lake Union, the Cascade and Olympic Mountains and Mt. Rainier. Boasting a population over 563,000, many of the city’s residents work at nearby Boeing, Microsoft, and Starbucks. Others work at the University of Washington and the Port of Seattle, the fifth largest port in the United States and the 25th largest in the world. With 52.7% of the population having at least a bachelor’s degree, CNN Money named Seattle the most literate city in the country in August 2006.
